Meet your physicians
West Salem Family Practice has cared for families in West Salem for decades. We’re transitioning to a Direct Primary Care model, and every physician in this practice is staying. Below, meet the people who’ll be caring for you.

John Guy, DO, MPH
John Guy, DO, MPH grew up in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. He graduated with a B.A. in Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and later earned his medical degree from Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Lynchburg, Virginia). After medical school, Dr. Guy completed his residency training at Valley Baptist Family Practice Residency Program in Harlingen, Texas. He also has a Master of Public Health from the University of Colorado where he focused on epidemiology and health care policy. He is board-certified in Family Medicine.
Dr. Guy returned to Salem — where his wife grew up — to work at West Salem Family Practice. In his free time, Dr. Guy enjoys spending time with his wife and sons, cycling, running, hiking, and being involved in his church.

Nicole Scherlie, DO, MPH
Nicole Scherlie DO, MPH is a native Oregonian. She graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a B.S. in Physiology. She then attended Western University, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest (COMP-NW) in Lebanon, Oregon. While at COMP-NW, she served as an Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Pre-Doctoral Teaching Fellow.
Dr. Scherlie completed residency at Loma Linda University in both Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine. While at Loma Linda University, she also completed a Master of Public Health where she focused on population health. She is board-certified in Family Medicine as well as Public Health and General Preventative Medicine.
Following residency, Dr. Scherlie had the wonderful opportunity to return to Salem, joining WSFP in 2023. Each day she is grateful to be a family physician in her community, walking alongside her patients and their families throughout all stages of life. She seeks to provide whole person care that addresses physical health, mental wellness, spiritual health, and community needs. Her clinical interests include lifestyle medicine — which seeks to combat chronic medical conditions with lifestyle changes, mental health and wellness, women’s health, pediatric care, weight management, osteopathic manipulative medicine, public health, and community education.
Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, cycling, kayaking, horseback riding, and visiting farmers’ markets. She also loves cooking, traveling, and learning about different cultures.

Scott Bean, MD
Born and raised in West Salem, Scott Bean, MD jumped at the chance to move back and practice medicine in beautiful Oregon. He joined West Salem Family Practice in 2013.
Dr. Bean received a B.S. in Biochemistry from Brigham Young University and then attended medical school at the Ohio State University. He completed his residency training at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH. He is board-certified in Family Medicine.
In his practice, Dr. Bean emphasizes the power of preventative medicine and helps his patients achieve their nutrition and fitness goals. He finds great satisfaction in helping individuals not just control — but eliminate — many of their chronic health problems.
In his free time, Dr. Bean enjoys serving in his church, cooking, traveling, running, singing, and being in the outdoors. Most of all, he enjoys spending his time with his wife, Anne, and their children.
Dr. Bean is an active member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians.

Heidi Thomas, MD
Dr. Heidi Thomas is a general internist who has practiced in the Mid-Willamette Valley for many years. A graduate of Oregon Health Sciences University, Dr. Thomas completed residency in internal medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and has been board-certified in internal medicine since that time. Dr. Thomas has been at West Salem Family Practice as the token internist since 2000, where she provides primary care for adults with medical issues including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and mental health concerns. She loves getting to know her patients and their stories.
In her time off, she enjoys spending time with her husband and with her five adult children and their families. She also spends time in her garden and time in reading and Bible study.

Paul Weaver, DO
Dr. Paul Weaver is a cranially trained osteopathic physician exclusively providing Osteopathic treatment to his patients — OMM / OMT / NMM.
A graduate of the College of Osteopathic Medicine/Pomona California in 1998, Dr. Weaver has been a part of WSFP since 1999. He spent 20 years as a Family Practice physician until changing to the current OMT / OMM only practice in 2019.
Dr. Weaver originates from Newberg Oregon, graduating from NHS in 1978 with subsequent education at Washington University in St. Louis with a B.S. in Applied Science in Chemical Engineering and a B.S. in Biology from Portland State University. He served 11 years on active duty as an Army doctor with duty stations at Fort Ord and Fort Irwin California and Schofield Barracks in Hawai’i until beginning civilian life in 1999 here in Salem.
Dr. Weaver enjoys gardening, the outdoors, knife making and painting.
